Is this trying to imply that the copies we have today are unplayable? Because I just played my PS2 one a few days ago.

I'm betting it's either my theory or they did not care enough. I recall around VCS being 10 years old the world started to get the R-rating.

EDITED NEW REPLY: I had no idea what that exactly meant but! Anyway. All PAL discs have no indicators other than the product code having something after the SLES-SCES-number on it (for example that "#" sign which tells you it's a reprint and likely a revision if one also exists) and Platinums are the revised one if any, and the disc data side is always in the same format, for example my v1.03 PAL (SLES-52541) San Andreas is "[IFPI L557] [Sony DADC] [A0100564585-A511] [37] [B1]" where elements can change, but that format it is (a variant of that is also technically on the label side as well, though the label is usually on the way, Platinums allow it to be seen quite easily). I don't know if any A0100 string numbers change, I did check my own games having same and different revisions as different releases and same revisions gave the same result with that, be it Black Label, Platinum or Promo disc, different revision gave a different number, so something might be up with that. Label side has nothing of interest (outside the software serial). There is no PSRM codes anywhere in PAL. And the barcode is its own depending on packaging language and region, and Platinum has its own as well, unlike in 'Murica (at least with those PS1 games I have, same barcode between Black Label and Greatest Hits). The serial is an indicator, but PC can reveal the version 100%. Though I can confirm other GTA discs for this string, as I have all the general European PS2 GTA revisions. And other odd games as well. Dunno how one could use the US San Andreas info, other than seeing that the packaging has everything it should have, as original is original and others are the updated one if redump doesn't lie and there's even moar - what difference they all even have otherwise, what's the internal version. Whereas in PAL, they did reprint GTA games in 2009 as Black Label discs, having those most up to date versions where available. In fact, all the revisions of each PS2 game (general European editions at least) in PAL land can be found as a Black Label release kek.

The pitch is clearly adjusted to be what it should be after speeding it up if it sounds normal, which is done sometimes. An example is Watch Out, We're Mad (1974) where the original Nordic DVD release from FutureFilm / Studio S / Another World Entertainment is pitch adjusted, while the way later Soul Media DVD release is clearly not. Time to debunk the myth where PAL equals always sped up sounding audio, it's not always the case. EDIT: Not Atlantic Film, but Studio S. Hmhm.

It's always amusing to me how peoples do stuff with certain setups, then try the same years later with a different setup and then they say "it isn't how I remember it" - well yes, because you used different stuff. Have to appreciate having a CRT one has always had though, my case is the same pretty much. Had that DAEWOO 20C9NT since it was bought around 20 years ago. The image is still fricken amazing despite all the use over the years. And yeh, I've had experience using PS1 and PS2 with LCD type TVs at all me friends, it just looks different and from OK-ish to bad depending on the oldness of the thing. CRT just looks right and great since that's what those were made for.

it definitely has a cheap sound to it, but i doubt the music really had much room to show off when the sound engine has to share CPU cycles with the graphics and gameplay. on the GBA, one of the three is always gonna have to get sacrificed a bit and i guess for this game they went with simple music to let the 3D renderer and gameplay work properly. i doubt he got much room to show his skills haha

Not gonna lie here, I've used a 16:9 CRT that had PIP. With size you could change or split the screen with two sources (yee a program and a games machine for example). Alternately you could split it with program image and teletext (who remembers that, wait that wasn't a thing in the US). Then that nice TV was changed to that OLED which thus isn't exactly mine but I've been forced to take a look at it when people are having issues plus I used it to this video demonstration here. Anecdote follows. After you make sure the settings are fine (image worsenings all off, sharpness middle or off, great brightness and stuff) you can watch at least things if you have nothing else to do it with, though if it's not 4K one is watching it's gonna suck at least a bit - don't know about gaming on one, I have nothing I can hook up to that as it only takes HDMI, the speakers are pretty bad as per slim TV usual (unlike in CRT televisions), the remote sucks with its analogue stick like buttons that have multiple features crammed to one button (it's like as if your PS2 controller had left analogue stick forward and backwards for volume, pressed down for mute, longer press down for hearing aid options, you gotta think it like that, peoples here have trouble understanding that remote, but a few buttons are like that), and if I'm not mistaken that thing no matter what changes brightness a tiny bit depending on what is seen despite me turning that feature off. Or it's the player doing it that's connected to it. I have no idea. But it's annoying as well. (I had a few TV's that did that automagic brightness change while I was working at a recycling center (not garbage recycling) and it was annoying to look at without a way to turn it off, damn LG.) Also, that OLED TV was bought new around 2 years ago and it worked for about one and a half years before something broke down inside and made the TV do the following: screen gets partly off and the rest melts off and device turns off and back on again, displays fine for like 2 seconds, rinse and repeat. It had to be repaired. Meanwhile, my CRT I still use? It's been going for 20 or so years just fine. No wonder businesses hate me as they don't get profits from me. (Seriously, that CRT actually lasted a few years when something broke inside it and prevented the usage overall, but my father fixed that TV and it has been going on to this day, that TV. And he wonders why I insist on using it with everything even these days and would rather want me to use those LCD craps. Amusing. True story, really. I swear (as in promise).)

Basically that. The source material itself dictates the quality whether it's good or bad, the TV / monitor just displays it as-is. Just gotta have great settings - ditch sharpness, motion interpolation, noise reduction, possible overscan, adjust brightness, contrast and color, the works. But yeh, CRT's mostly don't have crap you need to turn off and that's one reason they are a great choice for something.

Depends. I'm running the game as if it would be 2005 pretty much unlike peoples in general these days, which means there's possibilities that it won't be usable. I have the normal EU v1.0 exe with no added moddings on it, and anything being not that setup as I understand doesn't let it load.
